Our lives and technology….

By admin • Dec 20th, 2008 • Category: technology

For the past two days, we have been facing a huge internet problem in Egypt and some Middle Eastern countries.  The sub-marine cable broke from Italy.  I felt that my life stopped.  Could not get my mail, surf the internet, get the news, chat with my friends or even write my blog.

When and how did it happen that we have become so dependent on these modern technologies that we can not function without them. My mobile, for example, has become so important to me that I can not leave my home without it, and if I travel and forget my electric charge, I am lost, I have none of the numbers of my friends or their emails or my appointments.

When did we become technology freaks, even though, we have electricity, tv, sound systems still our life is not complete and these inventions are becoming basic necessities just like food and water if not more.

We are creating a virtual world that is almost non existent in our daily life. I have friends all around the world with whom I share interests and work and play games.  I have interactions with my virtual friends, we chat, we discuss, we state opinions.

Are we losing touch with reality and counting too much on the virtual world?? Are we compensating for things that we are unable to realize in reality?  Are we living the life that we wish for and can not have?

Many questions were popping up in my mind when I was having so much free time on my hands without the internet filling them. It is true that these technologies are opening the world to us. We know by the minute what is happening in India, the US or China.  Just with a small click.

It gives us insight to the world, and open our minds to the happenings around us on all levels: politically, socially, culturally and educationally.  It also has it defects: unwanted and uncontrolled content, fraud, theft, hacking etc..

If I have to choose between the evil of two worlds: I will choose modern technology anytime.

Long live the internet and bring on more technologies as long as we can learn and cope with.

  1. I second that opinion and wouldn’t have it any other way..I wouldn’t be able to live without internet or cell phone..but don’t you think that at the speed technology is going it is bound to turn against humans eventually? its a scary thought..
